Our project aims to help youths aged 13 to 16 cope well with their mental health issue(s) using healthier methods with the hope of saving a life. A study done by the IMH shows that 1 in every 7 residents of Singapore have experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime. Among these numbers, more than 75% interviewed had not sought proper medical help. Furthermore, in 2019, suicide continued to be the leading cause of death for those aged 10 to 29, and we believe that even an act as simple as providing a listening ear could go a long way. Mental health issues can stem from various different reasons, the primary reasons being pressure from academics and relationships. The Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) do have a 24hr hotline, and offer help to those suffering from mental health issue(s). However, many still hesitate to seek help due to the fear of being judged. Thus, as a group, we also hope to reduce the stigma associated with mental health in Singapore.

Project Alegría’s motto is the sun will rise again tomorrow. This phrase is one that puts forth a message of hope, encouraging youths to use healthy methods to work towards better mental health. Things may not work out today, but there’s still tomorrow: a new day to try again - thus we should never lose hope. We aim to provide teenagers with resources encouraging a more independent approach to cope better with their negative emotions, rather than resorting to harmful methods as outlets for their emotions. We hope to provide a more amicable community which serves as a platform for them to seek help comfortably, thereby promoting positive mental health amongst teenagers.
